I bought a $1000 chair today.
One of those Aeron Chairs by Herman Miller. I never sat in one before yesterday when I helped someone with their computer for 2 hours. I got up and knew I had to have one. $1000 is a heck of a lot of money, but it will likely be the last chair I ever buy. Its made like a tank and if it ever has an issue, I bet they will fix it for free. For $1000 they better! :-)
I should probably also preempt my friend Phil who got one of these at an office that was going out of business. He paid $25 for his! Damn you, Phil ! :-)

I found plenty at http://www.OfficeDesigns.com for way under $1000. Their warranty was very good too and they shipped my chair for free.
Why would you pay a $1000 for an Aeron chair fool! I bought a floor model(pefect condition with warranty) from http://www.ultimatebackstore.com for $799! (and no tax)
Not sure I am a fool, but you did get a nice deal. I searched and found this just now:
http://www.ultimatebackstore.com/product-exec/product_id/168
which shows that you can buy a floor model from UBS for $799 but it is also $50 for shipping. I paid $150 more but did not pay for shipping and instead paid tax (tax in VA is 5% so it is about the same as the shipping charge listed). So maybe I could have save $150 on a floor model, but that is just 15% off. Not that big a deal. I like my new one and I picked it up the same day ;-)
But thanks for this tip.
Seriously? You never sat in one before?
I think it’s time for an intervention. Top 5 technologies we need to introduce to Carl:
5. Cordless phone
4. Laser printers
3. Daisywheel printers
2. Fuel injection
1. 2XL: the talking robot with the friendly, funny personality!
Also, re: prices, remember there are a bunch of different configurations of the Aeron:
- Leather vs. fabric arms (I recommend leather, as the fabric can irritate your forearms)
- Various Pellicle weaves
- A, B, or C size
- Old-style lumbar support vs. new-style PostureFit (definitely get PostureFit)
- Basic arms vs. “highly adjustable” swivel arms
I got the new Posture Fit back. It it nice I guess. I also got the “highly adjustable” arms and they are nice to have. I did not get leather and I don’t see it as a real necessity. I guess I could swap them out for leather for $100 or so.
But I am happy for now. Best $1000 I spent in a while. I sat in the chair and edited photographs for hours today and never felt like I was tired of sitting.
